Nick Rahman opened Cardamom Black in 2011 after a lengthy career working for the Aagrah Indian restaurant chain. His dream was to open his own restaurant and change peoples’ perception of Indian restaurants from being a ‘curry in a hurry’, to more of a dining experience.
Cardamom Black Restaurant and Bar in Harrogate first opened its doors for business in December 2011. The building started its life as a Methodist chapel in 1872 but subsequently became the Empire Theatre in 1910 and closed in the 1920s. It operated as the Pinochio’s Italian restaurant for 31 years, before closing in the early 90’s.
The building was near derelict when Nick lovingly restored it, keeping the original structure including the Grand stage area that now plays host to the large circular revolving remote-controlled table, a favourite choice for large groups and parties.
Cardamom Black is not what you would describe as your usual ‘curry house’ and everything from the décor to the food is impressive. There is an extensive menu and a huge emphasis is placed on local produce, such as its Nidderdale spring lamb chops, provided for the restaurant by a local farm. Fresh produce combined with the accomplished skills of the chefs, who take the flavours and styles of the different regions of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, help to create the unique Pan-South Asian menu with the restaurant adding its own twists on classics and original creations.
You only have to glance at the seafood display to see that the chefs pride themselves on the vast array of fish and seafood choices, with dishes including king Scottish scallops on spiced pea puree, and a Goan seafood medley.
Each dish is cooked fresh to order, with freshly ground spices so curries can be prepared to your exact requirements from mild to extremely hot, whilst offering the flexibility to add or remove any particular ingredient.
Cardamom Black also offers a take-away service on all its award-winning food and has a full off-licence for alcohol.
As well as being an award-winning restaurant, Cardamom Black also offers a plush bar area with an extensive range of spirits served up by skilled barmen and mixologists who can create hundreds of cocktails, from classics to the restaurant’s own signature blends including Bombay Elderflower Mojito, Pornstar Martini, Lemon Sherbert and the delicious Thorntons Chocolate Cookie Daquiri!
The restaurant can comfortably seat up to 200 people, and has a private dining area so is perfect for any occasion or event. Outside the restaurant has seating for diners who would like to eat al fresco or just enjoy a pre-dinner drink.
The stunning mezzanine balcony overlooks the Grand stage and restaurant area and holds up to 60 people, with the adjoining private dining/conference room providing seating for up to 35 people, so is perfect for intimate parties or special occasions. Weddings and corporate events can also be catered for.
Full venue hire is also available for up to 260 people, with the staging area and PA system making it an ideal location for any event.
